Where to Collect Your SASSA Grant

SASSA payments can be accessed through several channels, allowing beneficiaries the flexibility to choose the most convenient option:

  • Retail stores such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar
  • ATMs using your SASSA/Postbank card (if valid)
  • South African Post Office (SAPO) branches
  • Cash pay points in rural areas

Beneficiaries are encouraged to avoid collecting their grants on the first day to prevent long queues and overcrowding. Funds will remain available for collection at any time after the official date.

Important Update for SASSA Gold Cardholders

SASSA has recently announced the final phase of the transition from the old SASSA gold cards to the new Postbank black cards. The deadline for switching cards was 20 March 2025. Those who have not yet made the transition may face the following restrictions:

The gold card may no longer work for purchases or withdrawals, even if the account has available funds.

Transactions at ATMs and retail outlets may be declined, and in some cases, the card could be retained by the ATM.

Despite the deadline, grant recipients can still access their funds at Post Office branches and through designated retail outlets using alternative methods. The card replacement programme will continue until the end of June 2025, and all affected beneficiaries are urged to act promptly.

How to Check Your SASSA Balance

There are several ways to check your available grant balance without having to go to a branch:

  • USSD code: Dial 1203210# or 130444# on your mobile phone.
  • ATM: Insert your card and follow the prompts to check your balance.
  • Retailer slip: Ask for a balance slip after making a purchase at participating retailers.

Make sure to protect your PIN at all times and avoid giving your card to anyone claiming to “assist” you.

Protect Yourself From SASSA Scams

Unfortunately, scams targeting grant beneficiaries remain common. Always be cautious of the following red flags:

  • Unsolicited messages or calls requesting your SASSA details or ID number
  • Fake competitions or surveys asking for banking information
  • Individuals claiming to offer quicker access to payments for a fee

SASSA will never ask for your personal information over WhatsApp or SMS. If in doubt, contact the official SASSA helpline immediately.
